  • Release date :
    Sweden - November 30, 1990
  • Sissel Kyrkjebø is a native Norwegian. She also dubbed Ariel's speaking and singing voice in the Norwegian dubbing, and provided the singing voice of the character in the Danish version.
  • Scuttle's Swedish name is Måsart, a pun on the swedish word for "Seagull" (Mås) and the Classic composer Mozart.
  • For its release in 1989, about three minutes of the movie were censored in three different scenes : the Sunken Ship (video #1), Ariel's voice (video #2) and the Final Battle (video #3) :

#1 Sunken Ship

Most of the shark shots - especially when it almost eats Flounder - were censored. In 2006, when the full length version was restored, they recycled one of Flounder's "Oh, no!" ("Å nej!") to fill in the missing screams.

#2 Ariel's voice

The scene Ariel's voice - at the end of Poor Unfortunate Souls - was originally performed by Sissel Kyrkjebø. Were censored all the footage with Ursula's green hands, Ursula's "now sing!" footage, as well as a shot where Ursula laughs after she took Ariel's voice. The only difference between the 1990 and 1998 censorship was that Ariel's vocalizations start at the beginning of the Magic Formula in 1990, while in 1998, they start at the end of the Magic Formula, and a part of those vocalizations were taken out.
In 1998, it's Evabritt's laughs that we can hear on Ursula, instead of Pat's.
The movie was released in its original length for the 2006 DVD edition, but
Jodi Benson's original vocals for the scene were mixed with the Swedish dubbing. The rest of Ariel's vocalizes (Vanessa on the Beach / Ariel's Got Her Voice Back) were left as they were, performed by Sissel Kyrkjebø. They also recycled some dialogues of Ursula to make her say "Sing, Princess!" ("Sjung, Prinsessa!") to fill in the "Now, sing!" that was originally cut.

3# Final Battle

In 1990, most of the close-up on Ursula's giant monster face were censored, as well as the shot where she's pierced by the mast. Her line "You, pitiful, insignificant fools!" with her tentacle crashing down over Ariel and Eric was also cut out. All the parts with Ariel falling and being attacked into the swirl were removed as well.
It's strongly possible the censorship in 1998 was the same, but there's no confirmation to this date. It's also possible Evabritt Strandberg's laughs were used this time, as they were in Ariel's voice.
In 2006, when the movie was restored to its full, uncensored length, as the line "You, pitiful, insignificant fools!" was never dubbed because of the censorship, to fill in this shot, they used Ursula's line from the next sequence "I am the ruler of all the ocean...", and therefore mixed for this second sequence some of Evabritt's laughs (maybe from the 1998 version of when Ursula grows giant?). Ursula's line "So much for true love" was also resynchronized.
